Spice Lake Fire in the Boundary Waters

The wildfire that started on June 13th between Ogish and Spice Lake is 65% contained. Fire crews have been actively fighting the fire since it began and are working to create fire lines to keep the fire from expanding from the 22 acre size. It’s dry in the woods and we’re thankful the USFS made the decision and had resources available to knock the fire down before it could become an incident.

Unfortunately a significant area of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has been closed due to this human caused fire. Groups who had or have plans to paddle and camp west of Saganaga and Seagull Lake must make alternate travel plans because of the vast area closed for public safety. With the small size and containment progress of the fire we’re hopeful the USFS will open up outlying areas quickly.

For more information about the closure you can check out the press release from the USFS. Information about fire fighting activities can be found on this website.
