Wilderness Treats

If a person knows what they are doing in the woods then they can sometimes find a feast.  Right now the fiddlehead ferns are ready to be picked and cooked.  They are a little bitter when raw but taste like asparagus when cooked.  There are edible mushrooms scattered across the forest floor but there are poisonous ones too.  The strawberry plants are blooming with their pretty white flowers so by mid-June we will have some delicious berries to eat.  Other berries abound in the wilderness too; thimbleberry, raspberries and almost everyone’s favorite northwoods treat, blueberries.  Rose hips can be made into jam or tea for a real treat and if you’re in the right place you can find wild rice.  The more you know about the plants the better off you will be, not to mention fuller too.
