Boundary Waters Black Backed Woodpecker
It’s easy to hear the tap, tap, tapping of a woodpecker on a tree in the Boundary Waters and on the Gunflint Trail. Woodpeckers are quite common up here especially the hairy, downy and pileated ones. Thanks to recent fires we’ve been treated with the opportunity to see Black Backed Woodpeckers on the Gunflint Trail.
While out on a snowshoe trek last week I was lucky enough to be able to get some great photos and video of a Black Backed Woodpecker. He was unconcerned about our presence and only flew away reluctantly when he thought Tara may try to kiss him.
