April Snow Storms Bring May…

If April showers bring May flowers then what do April snowstorms bring?  It sounds like we may be able to tell you after today’s forecast.  We’ve seen flurries throughout the weekend with intermittent sunshine.  The ice on the lakes is diminishing slightly as is the snow in the woods.  Very slightly.

The South face of any hills melts faster because of the time it has in the warm sun.  If you go on a walk and just look at one side of the road it looks more like winter while the other looks more like spring.  You can hear snow compacting and crumbling as it melts and shifts under its own weight.  Around the base of trees the snow melts faster as it does around big rocks and next to the roadway where dirt and gravel has turned it darker.

The birds are singing and the wind is howling this morning.  I imagine now that I really don’t want any more snow we’ll get dumped on.  The driveway was finally drying up a little bit and Sag Lake Trail out to the Gunflint Trail was in nice shape.

Here’s the forecast, read it and weep.
