The Big Thaw

The beautiful snow carving at the Gunflint Overlook has melted away like Frosty the Snowman.  I think I am almost as sad to see the snow melt as the children who ran and played with Frosty were when he disappeared.

The weekend was warm, way to warm for those of us who love snow and winter.  The high temperature was somewhere close to 50 degrees and with the hot sun shining down the snow didn’t stand a chance.  The snowbanks have shrunk, the snow on top of the lakes has started to form puddles, and the snowmobile trails took a beating over the weekend.

I haven’t been out on the cross country ski trails since the thaw.  I’m sure there is still a good base and conditions for morning skiing will be fast and fun.  When the sun comes out and the temperatures rise then beware of soft spots and slow skiing.

Winter can’t be over on the Gunflint Trail yet.  More snow will fall and temperatures will cool down again.  I’m begging Mother Nature to cool it off before all of our precious white stuff is gone; we’re not ready for Spring.
