Mosquitoes and More
Signs of spring and summer are everywhere on the Gunflint Trail. Blue lakes shimmer ice free in the brilliant sunshine as seagulls soar overhead. Pussy willlows have popped, marsh marigolds are appearing and it’s only a matter of moments before we hear the welcome call of a loon.
It’s April in the canoe country and the paddling season has begun. A sheet of ice still remains on Saganaga and Gunflint but soon it too will become part of the liquid gold known as the Boundary Waters.
I watched the northern lights dance as I stood on our floating dock and swatted at a mosquito. Yes, the signs of spring and summer abound.
