Dragon Boat Fun – Boundary Waters Blog

I love Dragon Boat racing. If you ever get the opportunity to paddle in a Dragon Boat then be sure to do it. There’s nothing like 20 paddlers paddling in unison with the sound of a beating drum matching each stroke. The long boat glides across the water with the head of the dragon leading the way.

The Northshore Dragon Boat Festival was held over the weekend and the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department had a terrific time. We practiced together for the first time on Friday night in the Harbor. After practice we participated in the parade with the fire truck, water hoses and all. Saturday was race day and it was a gorgeous day in Grand Marais.

The team paddled like pros on Saturday in spite of it being the first time for over half of the members of the team. We took home the first place trophy for our division and probably 5th overall out of 27 teams. I’m so proud of the team and how well they did. It was a great time for a great cause and I can’t wait to do it again!
