Chik-Wauk Pie and Ice Cream Social
If I had to guess then I would bet there will be some blueberry pies at this year’s Pie and Ice Cream Social at Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center. This year’s social will be held on Sunday, September 1st from 11am until 4pm at the end of the Gunflint Trail.
This is a fundraiser for the Gunflint Trail Historical Society that replaced the Taste of the Gunflint Trail event that began in 2008. The area resorts used to be asked to make something for visitors to taste to entice folks to visit all of the resorts. I would make my Aunt Bea’s Sour Cream and Raisin Pie that is featured in the cookbook, A Taste of the Gunflint Trail. Chik-Wauk would also be open with tastes for guests to stop in and enjoy.
One year there was Sour Cream and Raisin Pie served at Chik-Wauk even though it had been a tradition of mine to offer it at Voyageur during the event. Someone must have bragged about my Sour Cream and Raisin Pie to the volunteers at Chik-Wauk and then event organizers must have decided to cut out the competition. Either that or it was too much work to have all of the lodges participate and just easier to have the fundraiser in one location.
In any case, you’ll probably be able to get a taste of Sour Cream and Raisin Pie at Chik-Wauk on Sunday, September 1st. It won’t be made by me and it probably won’t be my Aunt Bea’s recipe from The Taste of the Gunflint Trail cookbook but I bet it will be good and it’s for a great cause.
There will also be local authors signing books and some bargains in the gift shop. The trails are there for exploring and if you take a hike up to blueberry hill you’ll be able to pick a few of your own blueberries and maybe make a pie of your own.
