The Ice Is Out
The ice normally doesn’t go out on our lakes up here until the 7th of May. However, all of the lakes on the Gunflint Trail have lost their ice, even Saganaga. The big part of Sag held her ice as long as she could but it finally is gone. Unfortunately I do not know the earliest date the ice has gone out, but this has to be a close 2nd. With the ice going out early we will extend our paddling season by a good 2 weeks. This is exciting for people who love to paddle the BWCA and Quetico. It will allow everyone the opportunity to get up and enjoy this wonderful canoe country earlier than ever. If you have an extra day of vacation or can get away for the weekend then I highly recommend coming up for an early season canoe trip. It is an awesome time to paddle and we’d love to see you up at Voyageur. Mid-May and the fishing opener isn’t usually too great of a time to come up for a walleye fishing trip, but this year, with ice out earlier, I think it could be. The Lake Trout should also be hungry and ready to bite. Give us a call or drop us an email and we’ll help you plan a spring trip.
