The Great Outdoors Inside

Movie lovers have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors inside a theater or their home. Good movies about time spent in the outdoors are hard to find.  “Deliverance” and “Without a Paddle” instantly pop into my head but there are a couple of newer options.

One movie is in theaters right now and it’s based on the book by Bill Bryson, “A Walk in the Woods.” I hope this movie gets lots of viewers and then inspires people of all ages to get outside and experience things like canoeing in the BWCA. Robert Redford and Nick Nolte hike the Appalachian Trail in this film and I am excited to go see it.

I finally watched the movie “Wild” this summer. Reese Witherspoon does a great job portraying Cheryl Strayed hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. I read the book quite awhile ago and of course I enjoyed it more than the film, but the scenery was better on screen than in my mind.

These films give viewers a brief look into what time spent in the wilderness can do for a body and soul. While I’d rather be outside experiencing nature if I have to be inside watching a film then it may as well be one that I can relate to.
