I don’t imagine Mary Black has been able to update her website today. I didn’t even bother checking actually. She is out on the trail with her team of 8 dogs competing in the Mid-Distance Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.
I was relieved to see both her and the other team from Black Magic Kennels are still in the race. I think it was last year when they had to scratch out of the marathon and were quite disappointed. Mushers train all winter to participate in races so it’s a major let-down to not be able to finish.
It looks like both teams are doing quite well in spite of the frigid temperatures. Our low at the end of the Trail was -18 degrees but temperatures should warm up quickly this morning. At the last checkpoint Chel, a mushing friend of the Black’s, was in 13th place out of a field of 30 racers. Mary was just a little bit behind her in 16th place but still in great position to move up.
Say a little cheer for Mary and Chel’s teams from Black Magic Kennels. Let’s hope by the time they make it to the end of the race in Tofte this afternoon they are in 1st and 2nd Place!
