Reasons to Visit Voyageur
Not like you need a reason to come to the end of the Gunflint Trail but sometimes it helps to be motivated. If you think about it then there is always something going on or some thing special happening in the wilderness or along the Trail.
April is one of those special times on the Gunflint Trail. There are very few people who visit during April and this is probably the best reason to come. If you’re looking to get away from everything and everyone then come on up. The moose make themeselves seen along the roads, the grouse drum in the woods and eagles soar overhead. Ducks and loons return to areas with open water and swamps begin to awaken with lively chatter. Bears come out of their dens and other animals give birth during April. One of my favorite things about April is watching the walleye spawn on the Seagull River and seeing the woods come to life.
This May will start out with the Gunflint Green Up and Ham Run Half-Marathon. Volunteers will plant seedlings and be treated to some great food and entertainment from May 2-4th during the Green Up. Everyone is invited to participate in the Ham Run Half Marathon or 5k Fun Run at the end of the Gunflint Trail on Sunday, May 4th. There will be food, music and fun for everyone at Way of the Wilderness and Trail’s End.
The fun will continue right into the fishing opener weekend and Jazz Festival May 9-11th. There will be music all around Cook County and on the Gunflint Trail for everyone to enjoy. When the music is over the fish will still be around luring visitors to the lakes in the Boundary Waters for the rest of the summer. Lake Trout fishing is a favorite for many May visitors on Sag and in the BWCA.
