On This Day

On this day 34 years ago the Edmund Fitzgerald sank to the bottom of Lake Superior.  29 men lost their lives in the frigid waters as Lake Superior expressed her fury during the Gales of November.  It’s a sobering thought to imagine a great ship sinking and I’m hoping I won’t live to hear about another one like it.  Our prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones on that fateful journey.  You can read more about the Edmund Fitzgerald on this informative website.

On this day 10 years ago something less tragic but still remarkable occurred.  Lake Superior could be seen through the window as this historical moment occured sometime after 8pm on November 10, 1999.  Our daughter Abigail Elaine was born and today she’s celebrating her golden birthday and the monumental step of making it to double digits.

Her birth was somewhat of a shock to me.  I obviously knew I was pregnant since I gained 70 pounds but I still couldn’t believe it.  It may sound strange to those of you who know me now but I really didn’t like little kids when I was growing up.  In fact, I always said I would never have children of my own.  Then, after turning 29 and seven years of marriage I asked Mike if he wanted to have kids.  He wasn’t sure and I wasn’t sure either.  I did say, "Well, if we’re going to have kids then I want to have one before I turn 30."

Mike obviously took this as a challenge as it was early January 1999 when I made the above statement.  I’m happy he did because not only do we have a wonderful daughter but also an awesome son.  We have no clue what we did for those 7 years of marriage without kids and no clue what we’ll do when they’re out of the house but we do know we’re going to enjoy every year in between because these days with our kids are the best days of our lives.

Happy Birthday Abigail, We love you!
