More Prescribed Burns

     The smoky air will last a little bit longer as long as the weather cooperates.  There are two separate burns planned for the upcoming week.

Project Name: Dawkins/Extortion  Information Contacts:    Gunflint Ranger District 218-387-1750 Seagull Guard Station  218-388-2215   www.fs.usda.gov/superior    

Date of Burn: Week of October 17 – 24, 2010; Ignition anticipated for Sunday, October 17th at mid-day, continuing through Tuesday, October 19th. 

Location: Near East Dawkins and Tucker Lake area of the Upper Gunflint Trail within the BWCAW. 

Project Size: 1963 acres 

Project Description: The project area has blowdown from the 1999 storm. We will reduce the amount of blowdown and help prevent the spread of wildfires to surrounding areas. The project will be ignited by using helicopters. There will be multiple aerial resources assisting with operations. There will be ground personnel and wildland engines working in and around the project area. 

Closures: The Banadad Trail will be closed in the area of the burn during operations. Campsites on Dawkins Lake, East Dawkins Lake, and a site on Cross Bay Lake will be closed. The portage to Extortion Lake will be closed. 

Smoke: Expect to see smoke throughout the week or until significant rains occur

Meeds Prescribed Burn    Date of Burn: Week of October 17 – 24, 2010;
Ignition anticipated for Sunday, October 17th at mid-day, continuing through Tuesday, October 19th. 

Location: This unit is on the north side of Meeds Lake in the Midtrail area of the Gunflint Trail and is within the BWCAW.

Project Size: 1626 acres. 

Project Description: The project area has blowdown from the 1999 storm. We will reduce the amount of blowdown and help prevent the spread of wildfires to surrounding areas. The project will be ignited by using helicopters. There will be multiple aerial resources assisting with operations. There will be ground personnel and wildland engines working in and around the project area.  

Closures: The Banadad Trail will be closed in the area of the burn during operations. Some campsites on Meeds Lake will be closed. Skipper Lake portages and campsites will be closed during operations.
