Lake Superior Water Level

With virtually no ice cover this winter I thought there might be a bigger drop in water level on Lake Superior.  Evaporation can happen when there isn’t a big sheet of ice covering the water but I guess conditions weren’t conducive to it? I’m not a scientist and I haven’t seen any comparisons between precipitation from last year to this year so I’m just pondering the information at this point.  The good news is Lake Superior’s water level is eight inches above the average!

DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – According to the International Lake Superior Board of Control, the lake’s level remained stable in February and begins the month of March eight inches above the average.

Lake Superior is 2 inches below the level recorded last year at this time and is expected to continue a seasonal decline during the month of March.

The 2017 shipping season will get underway on Lake Superior when the Soo Locks re-open on March 25th after being closed since mid January.
