Kid’s Fishing Party
We started the Take a Kid Fishing Weekend a little early at Voyageur this year. Thursday was Josh’s birthday and he wanted it to be a "fishing theme." It’s always difficult not to invite the entire class but we couldn’t imagine more than three extra fishing lines flying through the air so we limited the number.
Thursday wasn’t only his birthday but also the last 1/2 day of school. After birthday cupcakes for snack, a popscicle from the principal and a dilly bar from the bus driver the boys were pumped by the time they made it to the end of the Gunflint Trail. Instead of a gift bag of small toys each boy was presented with a rigged up fishing pole when they arrived. Life vests were added to their attire and off to the docks they went.
There they remained for most of the day and into the evening. Fishing with bobbers, attempting to cast and having a grand time in the great outdoors. When the storm rolled in they came inside and without power they played and talked into the wee hours of the night. By 5:30 am they were up and ready to get outside and try their luck again.
It was difficult to drag them off of the docks when they were having such a good time but by 1:30 pm we had to head to town. With fishing rods loaded into the Suburban we made the trek into town. Each of the boys has a new fishing rod and hopefully the desire to spend time in the great outdoors fishing. I hope all of you can introduce some youngsters to the life long sport of fishing on this year’s Take a Kid Fishing Weekend.
