Gunflint Trail Canoe Races

The Gunflint Trail Canoe Races were held on July 19th at Gunflint Lodge.  The races are an annual event put on by the summer homeowners to support the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department.  They are the highlight of the summer for residents, visitors and businesses alike.  Each year the Voyageur Crew participates in the fun races and for the past 5 years have taken home the trophy.  There are silly events like backwards paddling, broken paddle, and everyone’s favorite gunwale pumping.

This was the first year Mike and I were unable to attend the races.  We were busy serving firefighters dinner at Voyageur that evening but Don and Marilyn did an excellent job organizing all of the racers and collecting all of the gifts we won during the raffle.  There were some awesome prizes donated and a happy man from Illinois won the canoe donated by Wenonah.

This is a big fund raiser for the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department and the members appreciate all of the hard work involved in making it a successful event.  A big thank you to everyone who participated, attended and helped make the 2006 Canoe Races a great event.
