Good News About a Great Museum

I haven’t been able to attend many meetings of the Gunflint Trail Historical Society since Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center opened. There are just too many other things pulling for my attention at this point in my life. I do however take time to read the minutes from the meetings and am very excited to hear things are going great for Chik-Wauk.

Chik-Wauk is averaging almost as many visitors this year as it did last year. The number of visitors, members and income is up and people are really enjoying their visits.  I know I enjoy the museum and learn something new every time I go. I often take advantage of all of the wonderful hiking trails too.

I remember early talks with Gunflint Ranger Jo Barnier and Ralph and Bea Griffis about preserving the building. At that time Ralph and Bea were still living in what is now the museum. I can still picture the kitchen the way it was when I walk into the museum. There were lots of meetings and tons of work done by many people to get the museum going.  Many of those people are still working to keep it going while new people also join the ranks of caring for Chik-Wauk.

Chik-Wauk is worth the drive up the Gunflint Trail. If you haven’t visited yet then put it on your bucket list, you won’t be disappointed you did.
