BWCA Fire Update

Rain is in the forecast tonight so do a little rain dance to prevent any more forest fires from popping up.  Here’s the update on fires on the Eastern edge of the BWCA from the USFS.

Emerald/Knife Lake Fire
Our personnel figure the fire is about 525 acres still.  The fire is still smoldering, with some ground fire and an occasional single tree torching.  The forecasted winds will be from the west switching to northwest later in the day.  Smoke could be expected to impact the end of the Gunflint Trail and the BWCA in the vicinity of Knife Lake.  We have been staying in contact with Canadian Fire Management Officials, about this situation.  We have public safety personnel patrolling the Knife Lake closure area.  At this time the fire is entirely on the Canadian side of the border.
