Boundary Waters Ely Canoe Challenge

It’s a full moon and the perfect time to attempt the Ely Canoe Challenge.  What is this you ask? It’s when folks paddle across Saganaga Lake to Moose Lake and hitch a ride into the Dairy Queen in Ely. Then they hitch a ride back to Moose Lake and make the return trip through the Boundary Waters and back to Voyageur.

Last year Tessa and Chad completed the challenge in 23 hours and 31 minutes.  This year Voyageur Crew member Jake Benedel completed it in around 22 hours because he and his partner were able to convince a person to give them a round trip ride to and from the DQ.

Tonight Dana and friends will attempt to make the trip in record time by the light of the full moon. It’s quite the journey and we’re hoping it’s a good one.

A challenge exists between employees at the end of the Gunflint Trail.  It consists of paddling to the West end of the BWCA, hitchhiking to the DQ in Ely, purchasing an ice cream cone(saving the receipt), sending a postcard, hitchhiking back to the canoe and paddling back in under twenty-four hours. – See more at: http://www.boundarywatersblog.com/?item=twenty-four-hours-to-ely-and-back#sthash.8TkICXok.dpuf
