Winter Tracks in the BWCA

Winter Tracks is here in Cook County from February 1-10th, 2013.  There are tons of activities to choose from and the snow is plentiful.  This weekend I made some tracks of my own when I went out snowshoeing in the Boundary Waters.

The temperature was 2 degrees but the sun was shining when I ventured out to snowshoe.  The lakes had just the right amount of snow on top of the ice and the going was easy. In the woods on the trails it was a little tougher going because of a fair amount of snow.  No one had snowshoed where I was so it took a little more effort than following a well beaten path.

I didn’t see any wildlife but I did see some tracks in the snow. An otter had been out sliding around in the snow and had left an impressive trail.

There’s only a week left of the Winter Tracks Festival but according to our resident groundhog we still have plenty of winter yet to come. Come make some tracks of your own in the BWCA!

Cook County winter, by the numbers:
• 10 feet average annual snowfall
