There’s a New Ranger In Town

The big shoes of District Ranger Dennis Neitzke have been partially filled by a new District Ranger for the Gunflint District in Grand Marais, Minnesota.  Dennis left our District at the end of the summer to be a Forest Supervisor in North Dakota. We really loved Dennis and miss him greatly but welcome our new District Ranger to the Gunflint Trail.

The Superior National Forest welcomes Nancy S. Larson as the new District Ranger for the Gunflint Ranger District based in Grand Marais, MN.  Nancy will oversee management activities on 173,000 acres of national forest system land located in northeast Minnesota’s Arrowhead Region.

Forest Supervisor, Brenda Halter notes, “We feel very fortunate that someone of Nancy’s skill, experience, and knowledge of the Superior National Forest will be joining our team.”

Nancy Larson’s career in public service spans 26 years with nearly 23 years working with the U.S. Forest Service on national forests from West Virginia to California in addition to her service in the Peace Corps in Central America in the 1980’s.  Nancy holds a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan.  She has worked in a variety of resource positions with the Forest Service including soil scientist, recreation and wilderness program manager, forest partnership coordinator, planner, deputy district ranger, and district ranger.  She comes most recently from the Chippewa National Forest in Cass Lake, Minnesota where, during the past three years, she was the Public Service Staff Officer responsible for the recreation, lands, special uses, boundary management, heritage, engineering, and public affairs programs on the Forest.  Prior to her staff officer position on the Chippewa, Nancy served close to five years in Cook, Minnesota as the LaCroix District Ranger for the Superior National Forest.

Larson says: “I look forward to the opportunity to work on the Superior National Forest again, and as the Gunflint District Ranger. My husband, Jeff, and I are delighted to move to Grand Marais and to become part of the community.”  Nancy begins her job as the Gunflint District Ranger for the Superior on December 3, 2012.
