Superior Hiking Trail Fairy Tale

There’s hiking the Superior Hiking Trail and then there’s hiking the Superior Hiking Trail during the fall colors. Describing the trail goes from "WOW" to "It takes my breath away because it looks like a scene from Alice in Wonderland." Yesterday I was out of  breath, not just from the fall colors but the ascent of Moose Mountain.

A friend and I decided to hike from the Onion River Road to Lutsen Mountain for dinner. It was late in the afternoon when we left so we got to watch the sunlight play on the tops of the trees as it got closer to setting.  It’s only a 7 mile section but half of it was uphill, a very steep uphill I may add.

While staring at the ground during the ascent I noticed a cigarette butt and it encouraged me. If a smoker could make it up the hill, then so could I. Like the wolf in the Three Little Pigs I huffed and I puffed and I made it to the top of the hill all the while reciting the Little Engine that Could, "I think I can, I think I can…"

If you’ve never hiked part of the Superior Hiking Trail then I strongly encourage you to do so. It’s an amazing trail with awesome vistas, rushing rivers and mixed forests. And thoughts of an evil witch, a big bad wolf or 7 freaky dwarfs never crossed my mind.
