So Much Snow on the Gunflint Trail

It’s been a few years since I’ve seen snow like this on the Gunflint Trail.  It has been piling up and I couldn’t be happier. The only complaint I have is it made snowshoeing the other day a wee bit more work than I was ready for.

I thought the trek would be pretty easy because I had broken trail about a week ago. I knew we had a significant snowfall on Sunday but in the woods it was alot more than I thought. I wore my smaller metal snowshoes instead of my long wooden ones and that was a mistake. The wooden ones would have been a better choice due to the depth of the snow. Every step I took I sunk deep into the snow and had to pull up a snowshoe full of snow each time I lifted my leg. There was a good 6 inches of new snow in my old tracks and by the time I had finished my loop my legs were tired.

In spite of my wobbly legs I was very happy to have some fresh snow to trek through.  And the clumps of snow on the branches of the trees quenched my thirst and helped me stay a little cooler while snowshoeing.
