Open Water Beckons the Paddler

In spite of the fact it’s cold outside I’m drawn to the water and tempted to paddle a canoe. Even though I’ve never tipped a canoe I still am somewhat afraid of the cold water and dangers of late season paddling. There’s just a different respect for the water when it nears the solid form.

I’m kind of envious of folks who live in climates where they can paddle year round. But then I remember they aren’t near the Boundary Waters so would I really want to paddle as much as I do living here? Perhaps but I’ve paddled quite a few places and I still think the best place to paddle is the BWCA.

Maybe I am just anxious for the transition into winter? Maybe I just need some time in the woods? All I know for sure is open water makes me want to go paddling.
