I Saw a Waterspout

You would think I would have seen hundreds of waterspouts in my life but I haven’t. I did see one the other day though and it was really cool!

I was outside working on the docks on a very calm day. It was actually pretty quiet outside without the wind and very few boats or paddlers passing by. Then I heard a noise that sounded like someone spraying a hose or a squirt gun and when I looked up there it was.

A waterspout was circling around on the surface of the Seagull River. It was dancing like a tornado spraying water as it moved to and fro. It was probably only about ten feet tall and two or three feet in circumference but it was very neat to see.

It didn’t stick around very long and when it made its way to the shore across the river it disappeared.  I don’t know much about waterspouts so to learn more I looked it up online.

I still don’t know too much about waterspouts but I remember photos of one that happened on Gull Lake near Brainerd, Minnesota. I googled for photos of it and found an entertaining video.

Have you seen a waterspout in the Boundary Waters? If you get the opportunity then I hope it’s a small one.
