Gunflint Mail Run Winners
The mushers participating in this year’s Gunflint Mail Run Sled Dog Race had some brutally cold temperatures to deal with. Mushers are some of the toughest people I know but they don’t handle the cold as well as their four-legged companions do. There were some pretty cold humans and a little bit of frost bite due to some slush encounters but it sounds like it was a good race.
I love dogs and the sport of dog-sledding. Through my participation with Mush for a Cure I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of the mushers, their dogs and their handlers. It’s an amazing sport with the greatest people and so fun to be a part of.
This year’s winner of the 12-dog race were Ward and Colleen Wallin. They live down the shore a ways and their son plays hockey with Josh so we know them pretty good and are excited for their win.
The 2nd Place winners were Matt Schmidt and Erin Altemus and we know them because not only do they live on the Gunflint Trail but they also work at Voyageur Brewing Company. They are super people and we are so happy for them and their success.
You can check out the results of both races on the Gunflint Mail Run website. A big congratulations to all of the mushers and a thank you to the many volunteers it takes to put on a dog sled race. Way to go!
