Governor Declares No School on Monday- Too Cold

In case you haven’t heard the temperature is predicted to drop across much of the United States.  In the Twin Cities temperatures are expected to dip into the negative teens and that’s too cold for people in the rest of the state to go to school according to our Governor. He decided no one in Minnesota should have to go to school in those conditions.

I guess people elsewhere aren’t equipped to handle the cold like we are. Maybe they don’t have the winter wear or maybe they don’t have thick skin. In any case kids like ours are wondering, “What is the big deal?” My kids are quite accustomed to seeing the thermometer dip into the negative teens and negative twenties with nasty wind chills. Last week we had -38 and -40 on the Gunflint Trail but school was not cancelled.  If we cancelled school every time it dipped into the negative teens then I would have to home school my kids in the winter.

What are the impacts of a Governor declaring “No School?”  Well, the kids get to stay home from school and parents have to worry about child care but beyond that a person who works with tourism wonders what it tells tourists. I’m hoping it tells them to come North but I kind of doubt it. We’re also hoping the temperatures will be close enough to zero on Monday so we can go outside and enjoy the great outdoors.  After all, we’re hearty folks, who know how to dress for the weather and have thick skin.
