Energy Bars

There are quite a few products to choose from when searching for an energy bar but when you narrow it down to one that is good tasting and good for you the choice becomes much easier.  The two I prefer the most are Clif Bar and Peak Bar.  Peak Bars are good tasting and provide a great amount of energy but Clif Bars are so much more than a power bar.

The Cliff Bar is probably my favorite for a number of reasons.  First of all I like the name since it was chosen by the creator who named it after his father Clif.  Gary is the owner who claims to have made it in his mom’s kitchen and thanks her on the label of every bar.  Giving that much credit to parents means the guy has to be a decent human being! Another reason I like the Clif bar is because they are a member of some great organizations such as Leave No Trace and Undo It which you can learn more about on their website.  The next reason is the number of calories, protein, fat and fiber are within a good range for a power bar.  And the number one reason I like the Clif Bar is because it tastes good.

Other bars on the market may taste good or provide good nutrition but can’t seem to get both in the same bar. Power Bars are popular but I can’t seem to chew a whole one down.  It’s a good thing too because if you do eat an entire Power Bar you’ll be getting 100% of your daily recommendations of Vitamin C, E, B, B12, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, and Folate to name a few.  Getting too much of a good thing isn’t a good thing and can cause toxic levels of some vitamins and minerals in your body.  Most people eat more than one Power Bar in an entire day so there is no need to have 100% in the bar.

Nature Power Chews created in Atikokan, Ontario are great tasting energy bars but are quite high in calories and fat and are lower on nutritional value. One thing to remember is that many of these bars contain over 200 calories and if you aren’t using up much energy you probably don’t need to be eating an energy bar.

The choice is clear when you place value on both nutrition and taste when choosing an energy bar.  Clif and Peak Bars are up there on both and are the ones I choose when I need some energy in a hurry.  How about you?  Do you have a favorite?  Let me know if you do.
