Competitive Weekend

This weekend was about competition for some Cook County folks.  A number of us were in Duluth, MN for a hockey tournament while a few were near Grand Rapids competing in a dog sled race.

Local mushers Mark and Mary Black both competed with a team of dogs in the White Oak Sled Dog Classic.  I believe Mary took 5th place while Mark didn’t fair quite as well.  It was a 10-dog, 130 mile race that takes around 13 hours to complete.  What a beautiful night it must have been since the moon was full..  I’m sure Mary will have more details on her website soon.  They own and operate Black Magic Kennels and helped start Mush for a Cure, a Sled Dog Fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.  I’ve made a page for Mush for a Cure on Facebook too so if you’re logged on please visit and become a fan of the page.

Our family spent the weekend in Duluth.  Both Abby and Josh play on the same hockey team and Mike coaches them so Rugby and I cheered them on.  Rugby wasn’t too thrilled to be standing outside in the cold and was even less thrilled when a puck hit him on the head.  Luckily it was just barely moving so it didn’t hurt him enough to make him whine.  I was holding Rugby in my arms so you would think I would have been able to stop it, but I didn’t.  The kids played terrific and went undefeated, two wins and one tie game.  They had a big fan base as Sheri Prom, Curtis Blake and Mike Irwin came to watch; all previous Voyageur Crew.

It was a great weekend of fun and competition.  Now to get some rest since it was also an exhausting weekend even though I was only a spectator.
