Alpine Lake Fire

Another fire started in the Boundary Waters this afternoon near Alpine Lake.  The cause of the fire is from a lightening strike a couple of weeks ago.  At 1:00 PM approximately 75 acres had burned and by 6:30 PM that number was up to over 400 acres.  The fire started in a stand of dry Jack Pine and the high wind pushed it Eastward toward Voyageur.  It is about 1.5 miles from here but the smoke is thick enough to bring back bad memories of the Sag Fire of 1995.    We’re hoping for a change of wind direction tomorrow or no wind at all would be even better.  We will keep you posted on the fire situation.  This photo was taken by Bob Baker and it is smoke in front of the sunset, not flames.
