Pink and Black Magic

This weekend the Prom family visited a special place in the woods, Black Magic Kennels.  Mark and Mary Black own and operate this kennel where they raise and train sled dogs for racing.  I have talked about this in a previous blog but had never seen their operation first hand.

The Blacks and Theresa, (our summer employee who is working for them this winter) gave us a tour and introduced us to all of their awesome dogs.  Many of the dogs gave us hugs and kisses as they tried to win us over so we would pick them for adoption.

The Black’s started a special program where you can adopt a sled dog and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.  If you adopt a Varsity dog from their kennel then $100.00 will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation through Pink Paddles.  (Pink Paddles were designed by Sue Prom and are lightweight, bent-shaft, graphite canoe paddles that are sold to raise money for breast cancer research).

It was difficult for us to choose the dog we wanted to adopt even though we had read all about them in Mary’s Blog, Off the Beaten Path.   After careful consideration we decided to adopt Zena and are excited to follow her these next few months and see how she performs during the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.
