October in the Northwoods

Another beautiful day on the Gunflint Trail.  The temperature was in the high 70’s and blue skies were everywhere.  A drive on the Trail or a ride in a boat offers spectacular Fall scenery.  The grouse have been out sunning themselves and the moose are cooling off in the lakes and swamps.  The moose hunters are also out and about since the season opened yesterday.  Moose hunting in Minnesota is a once in a lifetime experience as you are only allowed one license per each group of up to 4 people.  Once you have been issued a license then you will no longer be eligible to hunt in Minnesota.  In order to hunt moose in Minnesota you must be a resident of the state.  I talked to a couple of guys in Trail Center who found themselves a bull moose in the BWCA yesterday afternoon.  They were out camping and hunting near Poplar Lake in the Boundary Waters and experienced a successful hunt.  Shooting a moose in the woods isn’t real difficult but hauling it out in canoes and across portages can be a challenge.
