Ham Run Half Marathon and 5k Fun Run Coming Soon

The Ham Run Half Marathon  and 5k Fun Run is coming to the Gunflint Trail on Sunday, May 1st, 2011. If you haven’t signed up to run the Trail Less Traveled then now is the time to do so since rates for the Half-Marathon and 5k Fun Run increase on April 1.

The route of the Half Marathon follows the path the Ham Lake Fire took in 2007. It passes streams, ponds, rivers and lakes as it makes its way from Gunflint Lake to the end of the Gunflint Trail along the National Scenic Byway. It’s a hilly course some folks find challenging but the surrounding wilderness helps keep your mind and body fresh for the task. Wildlife can be spotted along the way including grouse, ducks, loons, moose, beaver and more.

At the end of the race there’s a wonderful Ham dinner provided to participants free of charge. Others are welcome to join in the festivities for a nominal fee. Participants are also treated to a Pasta Feed at the Senior Center in Grand Marais on Saturday night provided by My Sister’s Place Restaurant.

There is great community support from local businesses. Some sponsors have been on board since the first race in 2008; Lake Superior Trading Post, Grand Marais State Bank, Pepsi, Wenonah and Christie Printing. Others have joined in over the years including My Sister’s Place Restaurant, Stone Harbor Wilderness, Threads and new this year is Swanson and Heeren Attorneys at Law. The Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department makes sure the race course is secure and volunteers make sure participants are well fed and hydrated. It’s a great race supported by awesome volunteers including Mike and of course, me!

We hope you will join us at this year’s Ham Run Half Marathon. Don’t Delay, Register Today!
